Buy fall first — the decor that's still up in December

Halloween decor has a 6-week life. Harvest and autumn pieces run from late August through Thanksgiving, and some of it survives into Christmas.

Most people shop this season backwards. Halloween goes up in early October and comes down on November 1st, which is about five usable weeks for something you paid full price for. Fall decor goes up in late August and stays up until the Christmas tree displaces it.

That's why the harvest tier is worth buying first, and why it's usually the better-made stuff — it isn't priced against a single night.

Baskets do the most work. The Woven Harvest Basket ($88) and the smaller Woven Turkey Basket ($25) are storage that happens to be seasonal. Nothing about either says October.

Faux stems beat real ones on the math. A $36 Japanese maple branch or the $120 mixed autumn wreath survives three seasons. Fresh stems are a two-week purchase at a similar price.

Whitewash over orange. The Autumn Pumpkin in Whitewash Brown ($44) reads as autumn without reading as Halloween, which is the whole trick — it's still correct on November 20th when the orange stuff is in a bin in the garage.
