8 Halloween finds under $40 that don't look like they cost $40

The cheap tier is where seasonal decor usually goes wrong. These are the pieces that hold up in a room after the novelty wears off.

Under $40 is where most Halloween decor is plastic, glossy, and obviously seasonal — the kind of thing that reads as "temporary" from across the room. The pieces below don't, mostly because they commit to a material instead of a gag.

The safest buy is a ceramic. The $24 Ceramic Ghost Figure and the $34 Ceramic Pumpkin Candy Dish both work on a shelf in October and in a cabinet the rest of the year. Matte ceramic is the single biggest difference between "styled" and "party store."

Skip the orange if you want it to last past October 31. The Lachlan Harvest Placemat ($24) and the Woven Turkey Basket ($25) carry straight through Thanksgiving. Same shelf, six more weeks of use.

One pastel pick. The Rainbow Pumpkin T-light set ($34) is the outlier here on purpose — pastel Halloween is climbing hard while gore and giant inflatables fall off. If you want the version of this holiday that photographs well, that's the direction.

Cheapest thing worth buying: the $8 terracotta mum stem. Buy five, put them in something you already own, and you've done a fall mantel for $40.
